McFarland Leadership Program: College & Post-College Internships

The City of McFarland is proud to continue investing in the next generation through the McFarland Leadership Program. Our College & Post-College Internship Program offers students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in local government while learning more about the important work that helps serve our community.

Internship positions are currently available in the Finance Department and Public Works Department.

Finance Internship Position
Interning in the Finance Department will provide interns with insight into the procedures that ensure financial accountability and support the city’s economic health.

Public Works Internship Position
Interns in the Public Works Department will have the opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge about planning and managing city infrastructure projects.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following:

• Be currently enrolled in an approved degree program, or
• Have graduated from an approved degree program within the past two years

Applicants must also:

• Have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Be a resident of Kern County
• Provide proof of current enrollment or proof of graduation, as applicable

Program Details

• Job-shadow City officials
• Assist with community event planning
• Learn about basic municipal operations
• Current college students: 8 to 10 weeks during summer, 20 to 25 hours per week
• Recent graduates: 6 to 12 months, up to 30 hours per week
